Volcanic risk

In Italy, volcanism originates from a broad geological process affecting the entire Mediterranean region and linked to the convergence of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates.
This process, which begun 10 million years ago, concurrently with the formation of the Apennine mountain range, is caused by the African plate subducting beneath the Euroasian plate with subsequent formation of areas characterized by volcanism. It is, in fact, in these regions, deep within the Earth, that conditions arise to form magma and propel it toward the surface.
Although less frequent and destructive than earthquakes, volcanic eruptions still pose a significant hazard to the densely populated areas of Italy.
